PROGRAM OF STUDIES

 

The HOLY ROSARY MAJOR SEMINARY Graduate School of Theology is an institute of higher learning in the sacred sciences owned and operated by the Archdiocese of Caceres. Its primary mission is to form and train candidates to the priesthood into competent pastors in the local Church of Bikol. It also provides the opportunity for the laity and religious to deepen their understanding of the faith, and so become knowledgeable committed members of the Christian community. As an academic institution, it offers the following programs of studies:

 

Ecclesiastical Studies

 

The four-year theology course leading to the degree of Bachelor in Sacred Theology (STB) is primarily meant for candidates to the priesthood. The seminary is duly recognized by the Congregation for Catholic Education since October 16, 1989 as a theological institute granting the canonical bachelor’s degree, by virtue of its affiliation to the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas, Manila.

2.      Sacred Scriptures Introduction to Sacred Scriptures, Introduction to the Old Testament, Introduction of the New Testament, OT History & Theology, NT History & Theology, OT Exegesis I & II, NT Exegesis I & II.

3.      History & Patristic. Ancient Church History, Medieval Church History, Modern & Contemporary Church History, Philippine & Bikol Church History, Fathers of the Church

4.      Systematic Theology. The Mystery of the Living God, Theology of Creation, Christology, The Holy Spirit, The Church, The Sacraments, The Eucharist, The Sacraments in Particular, Theology of the Priesthood, Mariology, Eschatology, Theological Synthesis & Ad Audiendas Confessiones.

5.      Moral & Spiritual Theology Fundamental Moral Theology, Theology of Grace & Sin, Theological & Moral Virtues, Human Sexuality & Bioethics, Social Teachings of the Church, Theology of Christian Perfection.

Graduate Studies

 

The graduate program of studies leads to two civil degrees, namely: an academic degree of Master of Arts in Theology (MA Theology) with specialization in Biblical Studies, Dogmatic Theology, Moral Theology, Church History and Pastoral Theology; and a professional degree of Master in Pastoral Ministry (MPM). As an educational institution, the seminary received government recognition through the Commission on Higher Education in 1996, making it the only graduate school of theology in the Bikol region.

1        Admission Requirements

1.1              For admission to the program, the applicant must possess any of these academic qualifications:

     a) A Bachelor's degree in Philosophy (PhB);

     b)  A Bachelor of Arts degree (AB major in Philosophy);

     c)  Any bachelor's degree with the completion of 18 courses in Philosophy, namely: Logic, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Man, Philosophy of God, and History of Philosophy (Ancient, Medieval, Modern and Contemporary).

1.2              The applicant must have a good grasp of English.

1.3              Upon enrollment, the applicant must submit his/her undergraduate transcript of records with the S.O. number.

2        Academic Load. Full-time students are allowed to take a maximum load of 9 units per semester, except for graduating students, who are allowed a total load of 12 units. Part-time students are permitted to carry a maximum load of 6 units a semester.

3        Transfer of Credits. Credits earned from other institutions may be accepted with or without validation. In all cases, candidates for the master's degree should earn at least 18 units in this institution, excluding units in thesis writing.

4        Academic Standing. The lowest passing grade is 2.0. A student who receives failing grades in two courses shall be disqualified from the program.

5        Assignment of a Thesis Adviser. A student may be assigned an adviser upon completion of the courses on Theological Research and Statistics.

6        Comprehensive Examination. A student can take the comprehensive examination upon completion of all academic requirements and upon presentation of the required clearance from the Financial Administrator's office.

7        Thesis Writing. Students may enroll in Thesis Writing only upon completion of at least 75% of the curricular requirements, including Theological Research and Statistics.

8        Graduation Requirements. A student can be awarded the master's degree after meeting the following requirements:

a)     Completion of 36 credits for MA-Th or 45 credits for MPM (60% of final grade).

b)     Passing the Comprehensive Examination (20% of final grade)

c)     For MA-Th, successful defense of master’s thesis (20% of final grade)

d)     For MPM, successful presentation of Pastoral Case Study (20% of final grade)
